Timber - A Shutters Senior Session

It's not usual that you find a girl as pretty, sweet and active as Timber that is so quite, so at first, we thought we would have to fight fake smiles and nervousness at this session. To my pleasant surprise however, it didn't take long for this blond beauty to break out of her shell. Between hopping into fountains and changing outfits in parking lots, it was a good thing! Now in the full swing of volleyball season and the start of her last year in high school, I want to wish Timber a great senior year!

Lindsey - A Shutters Senior Session

It's not often that a fiery haired senior comes knocking on your door with a clear sense of what she likes and locations to go along, so when Lindsey and I set up her appointment as one of my class reps for Harrisonville High School, I was almost as thrilled as I was while editing her photos. With one of the best serious faces I've seen (and no, not everyone can pull it off), milky skin, bright eyes and hair that is the perfect contrast, I knew we had nailed several images even in the bright (and hot) sun.

Here are some of my favorites. I hope Lindsey agrees with my choices!

A Family Affair

It's not too common that a photographer gets to shoot one of the biggest days of their sibling's life, but that is exactly what I had the opportunity to do for the "I Do's" of my brother, Jason, and new sister-in-law, Apple. Despite a dreadfully hot and humid day in downtown Lexington, Kentucky, the wedding couldn't have been more beautiful and couldn't have been more fun for our family to share.

A Doggy 'Tail'

Though not the most typical shooting subjects, I adore when I have a shooting subject of the 4 legged kind. An animal lover since I was born, little Ms. Vera made it very easy to fall for her. With all of her tricks (my favorite being her "I'd rather be dead than be an MU fan" - sorry all of you Tiger fans) and her little face that I just wanted to squeeze, she was irresistible, and such a good little model! Her mom might just have a little animal actor/model on her hands. All I know is I can't wait for her next shoot. Here are some of my favorites from this time however.

Sticks and Stones....

Alright, I'm not quite sure how that title ties in really, but I couldn't help doing a spin off of the name of the GORGEOUS church that the newly minted Mr. and Mrs. Emokpae found to house their "I Do's". Built in the spring of 1888, this church has certainly seen a fair share of vows exchanged during its day. However - and yes I realize that I am biased as there is something about these two that I just love together - I doubt many couples have been as cute as Heather and Vanness. Even the preacher couldn't help smile when these two looked at each other.

May those smiles last forever you two! Congrats!

Sometimes weddings days start out rainy...

.... and end in perfect sunshine. That's what happened to my next couple to be highlighted. Though we woke to an amazingly dreary day, no spirits were soaked with this wedding party. In fact, though we had to rearrange our photo times to allow for a dry bride, this day turned out to be pretty perfect. Michael and Bryan's were able to ring in their newly minted marriage with friends and family from all over the States, some very entertaining 'Chicken Dancing' and a great tribute to the love they share.

Introducing the Kerns

Alright.... before sneaking out of here for a THREE DAY WEEKEND (everyone please hold their applause until after you've finished reading so as not to distract from the following images), I wanted to share with all of you another one of the many weddings Shutters has been fortunate to document this wedding season. With one steamy day, a few pairs of Converse shoes, and many laughs, David and Lynsey were able to pull off one heck of a wedding showcasing their personal style.

Getting Kerry'ied Away

Lots of weddings to post since all of my last weekends have been spent at beautiful weddings, but I wanted to start with this one since the bride happens to also be a high school friend of mine. I was so excited to see Ms. Kerry so excited and happy on her big day. Not to mention a mix of rowdy friends, some that I've known for years and had a blast catching up with, that made this wedding one of my favorites so far.

Did I mention the party bus specifically brought in to haul us - myself, the couple and all TWENTY of their bridesmaids and groomsmen - around for a short photo shoot after the wedding?

Double the Fun

When Sherri called and told me that not only would she like to book a shoot for her family, but then followed up to tell me that she had a set of 8 month old twins.... I couldn't hardly contain myself. Not only do I get to be around one baby just getting to the squishy, ornery stage which I adore - there are two of them. For those of you who don't know not only am I only one half of a set of twins, my little brother and sister are also twins, so guess it's in my blood to love and adore babies two at a time. Regardless of all of this however, this little guy and gal were a pleasure to shoot, though ever so shortly (organizing the cooperation of two babies at once is as tough as it is rewarding).

"Giving is Awesome" 2010 shoot

This next posting holds dear to my heart. Though I have a great time working with all of my clients, the last two years have given me a chance to get a bit more personal with the winners of my "Giving is Awesome" contest. Each year I give a free shoot to a family or person who deserves the gift of lasting memories (thanks to selfless acts, or tons of hard work, etc), but might not be able to afford it. This year's winners were the Levsen family who had unfortunately hit on some hard times with the turn of the economy.

Their response when they received my call on Christmas morning not only made me cry, it made my day knowing that I'd provided a gift they otherwise wouldn't have had.

The Heathers...

So, some of you younger followers might not quite get my reference to the 1988 cult movie 'Heathers' (and if you don't, you should look into it, assuming you are of age for a bit of inappropriateness) but I couldn't resist the play on words for this posting. Since I'm so far behind on postings, I thought I could capitalize on my gorgeous Heather engagement duo.

Heather King was my first beautiful bride to be. Her and Vaness are set to tie the knot next Saturday (I told you I was behind), and were true troopers in toughing out a cold March morning for our engagement shoot. You know when Vaness started getting chilly that Heather had been shivering for nearly an hour, but luckily, their good-looking-ness beat out the chilled face look so we could come up with these great shots!

Next up was the beautiful Heather Zumalt. First, I'll point out that I know you guys out there are drooling with my switch straight from a red head to a blonde. More than just good looks however, Heather and her fiance Justin - both new to Harrisonville from their native Belton and Raymore - are all set for an October wedding. With smiles like these, and easy going personalities (which is good as our recent tornado passed right through their neighborhood - yikes) I can't wait to shoot them on their wedding day. Shutters teams with Relay for Life

Shutters Photography has teamed with the City of Harrisonville and the American Cancer Society for this year's Cass County Relay for Life event. Right now, we are sitting at $900 in donations, but we are looking to continue on that and help as much as we can with the fight against cancer.

Keely - A Senior Story by Shutters

Alright, I have a TON to tell, as I've been neglecting the blog lately. Thanks to a SUPER busy month littered with shoots, yearbook photo deadlines for seniors, Holiday shoots and Christmas card designing, we've got a lot to share..... and more already lined up!

First, Dylan. This hot shot is smokin' on the basketball court, and you could tell it was his passion when it came time to shoot his senior photos. Although this posting is about a month overdue, this week proves to be perfect time to share some of my favorite images from his shoot, as he took the court for the first time this season with the rest of the Wildcats just late last week with a soaring win. So, without further ado, here is Dylan.

Next up is little Carter man. Not that this needs much explaining, as this little man has every bit of charm he could have packed into his short time here. Getting ready to enjoy his very 1st Christmas, this tike already made his parent's year with his arrival. I have to admit, though I do not agree with his choice in collegiate athletic teams, he makes that Tiger outfit look good!

THEN - comes little Brookers. I have to admit, I'm partial to this little princess as I claim pseudo aunt status on every inch of her little baby deliciousness, but even a stranger couldn't deny this little tike's absolute perfectness. Though I have to admit it doesn't take much to make this much 'pretty' look good, I was still very pleased with the results of this mini shoot.

Finally, I have to admit that this posting only gets better and better. I know - no, let's rephrase that - EVERYONE knows that I'm very partial to these two little ones. Why? Because these next two little tikes are not only my very favorite Shutters models ever, they also happen to be my very own niece and nephew. Since I pride myself on spoiling them rotten at every chance I get, we had a little day trip together to get a few Christmas cards shots and then fill them with candy, d'Bronx pizza and lots of shopping.

A Princess Turns 1 - Babies by Shutters Photography

Those of you who follow my blog have seen this little cutie featured before. In fact, I believe this will be her 3rd appearance on the Shutters' Blog, and she's just turned 1. That puts little Miss Madisyn close to the record of 'shout outs' on the blog, rivaled only by my built in models (my niece and nephew). With baby blues like these, I'm sure no one minds repeat of this cutie though.

Miss Haley and Mr Troy - Senior Portraits by Shutters Photography

While I traditionally try to give every client their own posting, I couldn't help myself in combining these next two featured Seniors into one, large and fun-filled post. While we didn't shoot these sessions together... both Troy and Haley have some similarities in my eyes. You see, not only did they both swim for me in my swim team coaching years, they also both have their own very unique personalities, that compliment each others'.

Haley, with her bright green eyes, and Troy with his baby blues, both are ornery - which anyone that knows me, knows I LOVE. They are both true to themselves. Neither have a shy bone in their being, and both made some of the most ridiculous poses that I've ever shot, which they will probably pretend to hate me for sharing (so I'll half halfheartedly apologize now). :)

Byron - Senior Sessions by Shutters Photography

I've had the pleasure of shooting many Seniors this year, many of whom have made me smile and laugh throughout our sessions. However, the senior featured in this post takes the trophy for having the most contagious smile I've quite possibly ever seen. Don't get me wrong, I think all of my client's smiles are beautiful (even those that swear they can't smile - hmmm mmmmm - Jake), but something about Byron's smile simply gives me a HUGE grin every time I see it. Hopefully it does the same for you on this bit of a gloomy Monday morning!

I had a really great time 'shooting' Tyler, who just moved to Harrisonville during his high school career, despite some pretty brisk winds popping through on his photo day. With a bit of photo shopping to a red nose however, all was well. I'm just thankful Tyler had a sharp wit and fast tongue to keep me laughing, as I was FREEZING!

Let me start off this post by allowing me to brag for a bit. Not only do I get to share in people's memories while simply doing my job, I have to say that I have been seriously blessed with some really amazing clients. This next couple is no exception. Fun and funny. Relaxed. Inviting. Everything you can ask for in a couple you get the pleasure of covering on their big day. You've seen them here on the blog from their engagement photos, and now they make it back again with beautiful images from their wedding day!

From the gorgeous colors, to the unforgettable party bus ride to the reception, to the first dances and the most gorgeous wedding cake I've seen in person to date, I believe this day turned out exactly as they wanted - minus abnormally cold weather during our outdoor sessions! Even that turned out alright however, and I'm glad, as they are definitely a desiring couple.

An International Wedding - Weddings by Shutters Photography

The wedding I am going to share with you in this posting is special on many levels. First, not only did this bride and groom defy all odds by meeting and falling in love while the groom just happened to be visiting another country (Peru), they also happened to pull off an elegant and beautiful wedding regardless of language barriers and the HUGE inconsistencies of the Peruvian Visa department. With live feed of the wedding and reception beaming back home to family and friends of the bride, this wedding was not only a joy to capture, but was a true international wedding.

An Ornery One Year Old - Child Portraiture by Shutters Photography

My next subject is a beautiful little tot, and independent to boot. At only 1 year and 3 days old, this little lady flat out refused to sit still the day of our first shoot (or even look at me long enough to get a shot). It wasn't all her fault however, she was coming down with a bit of a cold. So, what to do?! Give her a couple of days and reshoot! What was the result? You can see for yourself below!

With a fresh start, and a refreshed immune system, this little one was an even bigger handful, and I LOVED IT!!! Happy 1 year birthday Ayla!

This next senior - Hillary - is very special to me. Not only have I known this senior's family for a very long time, they have remained very special to me year after year. In fact, this particular senior used to ride around on my hip when I was younger and my best friends and I used to plot on how we could con her parents into letting us babysit on a weekend and pretend that she was ours so we could look older... for various (and mostly incriminating) reasons.......... and don't worry, we never got the guts up to try it.

With all of this said, this very special family is going through a rough time, and I was more than glad I could help brighten times up for a bit with these fabulous images. I hope that everyone loves them as much as I do. I have to admit, it is hard taking bad photos when you have such a gorgeous subject.

Oh Jake..... Shutters Photography

I apologize for my few day disappearance. I've been laid up at home for a few days a bug I just couldn't shake. With that said, I have many more exciting things to post for you, so without delay, here is my next Senior!

Jake, who is my only Senior that has 'not known how to smile' was a crack up. I know him from sports shots, as he is a starter for the HHS football team, but I've never realized that he just isn't really a full out smiler. He is more of a 'smirker' or a 'grinner' if you will. Still, with the help of his mom and girlfriend, we managed to get a few full out smiles from this tough guy - and I'm glad we did, as those smiles are my favorites!

Travis - By Shutters Photography

It has definitely been a senior season of guys for Shutters this year, and I have to say, it's been much more fun than I thought. Let's be honest, and other photographers will vouch for this, sometimes, it is just way harder getting good images from senior guys as they just usually aren't as 'in to it' as the girls. Plus, high school girls have all seen at least a couple of episodes of America's Next Top Model, and do pretty darn good at recreating Tyra's less ridiculous poses. Guys on the other hand, need to be directed, which makes a photographers job harder, as you have to come up with more poses, give better directions, and more. I have to say though, all of my guys this year have warmed up pretty darn fast.

This next senior is Travis. A Wildcat with hopes of going to med school and a really fun mom (that's been a theme this year as well - cool moms), this senior is my biggest dare devil to date. Yes, that is the City caboose... and no, I will not say if he was really on top of it or if I photoshopped him in, but let's just say, this guy wasn't afraid of heights..... or falling backwards into pools, or climbing chaffolding.... ;)

Drumming up a Senior Session

My next senior, Eric, is a young man who is not only a really cool guy, but someone that I've known for years (and yes, I can't BELIEVE he is a senior). Part of a Christian Rock band that is getting a ton of recognition lately, a drummer in the HHS band and re - this senior wanted to stay true to his musical roots and showcase them, as well as his personality, in this city packed session.

Greg the Gregarious

This next senior lived up to the play on his name like a champ. Outgoing and very handsome, Greg is next on my list of sessions to share with you. My first senior from the Blue Valley district, Greg charmed me over with his smile and his mom won be over just as much with her liveliness. From holding a Michael Phelps inspired shirtless pose showing off Greg's state swimming medals to him making fun of his mom and I, I really enjoyed this shoot.... and loved the images that came from it!

Zach's Senior Session

Alright... now it is very common for seniors to be good at smiles, but this guy took the cake. In fact, poor Zach had a hard time NOT smiling, which explains why we don't have many images without a smile from this session. With those eyes and an ornery mom, girlfriend and brother as his entourage, this session definitely topped the books (and I have plenty of behind the scene photos to prove it, so stay tuned)!

A Crazy Couple of Cousins

Alright, LOTS to report today, so I'm not sure where to start. I'm backed up on some serious updates, so let's start with this. With schools back in session, it is definitely the season for seniors. Already this year we've had 5 senior reps - Kate, Tim, Brooke, Greg and Zach - grace us with their own styles and tastes, and that is just the beginning. So, without ado, let me introduce you to our first senior rep for 2010; beautiful Kate.

With legs for days and some serious know how on working it for a camera, this session was AMAZING. It helps that I've already known and adored Kate for a few years now, but still - I was majorly impressed. Here are just a few of my personal favorites.

A Perfect Party

....... ok, it was more than just a party, this was Chadd and Lana's perfect reception! Lana and Chadd, just married in beautiful Key West, recently invited me to share in their reception memories with them. Held in their very own backyard, this couple showed just how easy going and fun they were with a picnic-themed fiesta. Complete with a tasty dinner, personal pies for guest, a perfectly lit tent and their very own fireworks show, this was one reception I simply didn't want to leave. Congratulations you two!

A 'Wunder'ful Wedding

2009 Wedding Season

Whew! What a month and a half it has been! I should have logged online and checked in with a post letting everyone know where I've been, but I simply haven't had the time. Why? Because it has been wedding season silly!

That's right, it's the season to tie the knot, so I've been chasing wedding parties all around the area.... and man, WHAT A PAYOFF! Shutters' Holiday Photo Giveaway

As many of you know, Shutters joined with Giving Is Awesome this past Holiday Season to bring some Holiday surprises to deserving families in our community. Along with 544 other photographers across the nation, and world, Shutters helped 'GIS' in gifting over $573,417 worth of photography services. Originally, I had set out to donate one Giveaway Session. However, after hearing so many moving stories of great families in our area, I could not just decide on one winner. Soooooooo.... I decided Shutters was going to give away not just one.... not just two.... by THREE recipients. Over the last few weeks and in between other shoots, I have shot and edited two of these sessions and wanted to share with you some of the beautiful stories behind them and the fun images we captured.

First up was Carol Brewer, nominated by her daughter-in-law, Patricia. Carol is a loving and doting grandma, who has been struck with some unfortunate medical situations and several personal losses in the last years. Realizing her 5 grandchildren are fast growing up (and moving on to their own activities), her family wanted Carol to have family photos to have and appreciate.

Second was the Bazley family, nominated by long time friend, Cythia Livingston. Melissa and Raymond have a gorgeous and loving family, that almost lost them last year when a drunk driver hit their motorcycle while traveling home one night. Angels were obviously watching over them that night on the highway, but it's their own four angels - Devin, Kuri, Mallory and Seth - that are bringing them through the ending stages of their recovery.

It was a pleasure meeting and spending time with both families. I look forward to my third session, soon to be set!

Last weekend I forced my brother's girlfriend into a quick mini session for senior photos. The goofball (and yes, I have authority to call her names since she is, in fact, dating my brother) had yet to get her Senior photos done and was getting ready to send out graduation announcements. Being a photographer, everyone can understand why I simply couldn't have her sending out invites without any photos.... so I took action.

After 40 minutes and a quick editing session, in which I made her and another of my favorite seniors sit through and watch so they could pick out their favorites and but my editing time, we got some big results.

Have I mentioned how much I love spring colors? If not, I'll do so here, as I post some of my favorites.

Another Babe of Spring

Continuing on my post from yesterday, I have yet another spring beauty to show off in Little Miss Riley. With a full head of dark hair and yet another pair of baby blues, I was once again in heaven cuddling this little one between shots. Between Riley and big sister Reagan, this family has a lot of practicing to do in 'shooing' away all of the young men in a few years.

Wow! I hadn't realized how long it had been since I've posted an update... however, I have a good excuse - or two. I've been busy shooting and editing some very special little cuties and their families over the last few weeks. I'm not back, in between editing sessions of last weekend's shoot, to share what I've been up to!

First up was Little Miss Claire's session. Set up by her grandma while on a visit to stay for the weekend, this little cutie showed us some baby blues and fancy shoes!

Next up was little Madisyn. Maddie, who I've had the joy of knowing since she was 3 days old, is simply growing up WAY TOO FAST. Check out the curls starting to grow on that cute little head! This makes blue eyed beauty #2. Here are some of my favorite shots from our Mother's Day mini-session.

Something 'ENGAGING'...

Last weekend was a time for some fun, apparently for myself and my recently engaged clients, Jeff and Nicole. None of us started off the morning very hot, which we learned through talks at the shoot, thanks to some differing activities the night before... late night birthday party for me and fighting events for Jeff and Nicole. (Jeff is a mixed arts fighter - he didn't fight himself thankfully - as both Nicole and I would have had a hayday had he shown up for engagement shots with a shiner!)

Some GREAT locations, nice weather and superb company, quickly snapped all of us out of our dazes however, and we were in full blown 'photo zone'. There are a TON of photos to choose from on this one, so I'll blast out just a few of my personal favorites.

Giving is Awesome, back at it again!

In December, many of you read about my participation with the extraordinarily great group Giving is Awesome, to provide high quality family portraits for deserving families who wouldn't otherwise be able to afford them. Since I couldn't decide on ONE winner, Shutters is donating THREE - say it again - THREE SHOOTS to deserving families in the upcoming month. That seemed to happen around the globe as more than 500 photographers from the states and abroad donated over half a million dollars worth of services and prints. Now, Giving is Awesome is looking to hit another landmark, and WE NEED YOUR HELP. Read on to find out more!

Giving is Awesome was founded in December of 2008. It was a simple premise: photographers give a portrait shoot and products to a family who deserves it, but can’t afford it. In the twelve weeks since then, over 530 photographers have donated over $550,000 worth of custom portraiture to families who couldn’t afford it. Artists in places as far flung as Australia, the Philippines, the United Kingdom, and Mexico joined in - including yours truly at Shutters Photography.

Giving is Awesome is also featured in this month’s issue of Professional Photographer magazine, and we’re looking to continue to spread the word about giving. Lenovo and Microsoft are sponsoring the ‘Name Your Dream Assignment’ contest, which grants $50,000 to the photographer who wins to shoot whatever/wherever they would like. What better way to spread the word than to load 12 photographers into a tour bus and hit up cities with Giving is Awesome shoots? The blog traffic generated by the tour would easily reach 50,000 photographers per day, thus multiplying the number of photographers who sign on for the 2009 version of Giving is Awesome. (The goal: 15,000 photographers for the 2009 edition.)

…but how would we decide who to shoot for those tour bus Giving is Awesome giveaways? Why, we would rely on our friends at ConKerr Cancer, an international charity, to provide our subjects: children currently living with cancer. We’d be bringing awareness of both utterly smashing organizations to light, spreading the photographic love, AND rockin’ a tour bus! Now we’re talkin’!

What if this project doesn’t cost $50,000? Easy! ConKerr Cancer receives the funds to purchase cameras for their chapter coordinators, less the expenses of the tour. This allows the impact of the tour to go much further than the people on the bus, or even the photographers associated with Giving is Awesome. It’s the ripple effect in its truest form, giving sparking giving sparking giving.

A Seriously Super Mom and Baby

A couple of days ago I promised to post the images about a recent maternity and newborn session I did. Wait... did I just say maternity AND newborn in one sentence? I did. That is because this SuperMommy and I shot her maternity session ONE DAY before she had this little bundle of cuteness. So, not even a week later, we were shooting away at little baby Maverick. Check it out.

Here are a couple shots of mommy and 'sister', Daytona (the cute little nugget of an English Bulldog below), awaiting this little one.

AND..... without hesitation, here is the little bundle of joy himself, only 5 days later!

I'm not sure if families get much cuter than this, and I can't wait to shoot little Maverick in the years to come, as he has one of the cutest families around! CONGRATULATIONS JADE AND JEREMY!

My favorite little one...

Alright, this little one I can say without hesitation is my current favorite little chunky monkey in the world. Why can I say that so publicly you might ask, because she is my littlest little relation, my niece Aixa. While I completely adore my clients, I'm sure they can give me concession to confess my unwavering doting on this little one. Born with jet black hair and midnight black eyes, you might just get as hooked as I am when you see these newest photos.

Being the niece of a photographer has some definite perks, one being that when I need a guinea pig, or when my next session is about to arrive and my little nugget has just happened to drop in (my twin has a keen sense for 'stopping' by right before shoots), she gets thrown into action, and at only 6 months old (today actually) brings the 'A' game of a seasoned vet. While my family teases me that Aixa is going to start developing a permanent blink when she sees me from such constant 'photo training' (they all compare it to Pavlov's dog experimentation) I maintain that I will be forgiven for all someday when she has tons of cute little memories to show her own babies.

So, here she is, little Miss Aixa at 6 months old (and my 'eldest child' Colt, our 6 year old black lab who is one of Aixa's biggest fans).

NOW.... what I SHOULD have been editing while I snuck off to do these and make this posting, is the maternity and baby photos of the Wunder family. That's right, just ONE day after our maternity shoot, Jade had little Maverick, and he is a handsome little man. I'll have more to post VERY soon, so stay tuned!

My Hero......

......... my grandpa.

I've come to realize that while you can have many people that you look up to in your life, there is only a select few that you can admire enough to call a hero. My parents are two of those people, but my grandparents were the rest. Unfortunately, I have only one living grandparent left, and I thank God that I am now old (and I suppose wise) enough to value each and every moment I have with him. My grandpa Joe is 91 years old, and still as strong as an ox. He was tough as nails when my father was growing up, and though I'm sure he still could be today if he wanted, he is one of the biggest softies in the world when it comes to me. (Yes, I'll admit, I was ALWAYS grandpa Joe's girl.)

Every year my dad, grandpa, twin sister and I all have contests to see whose garden grows the best tomatoes, and every year our tall tales get bigger... i.e.: "Grandpa, the Army ROTC just got called in! My tomatoes are getting so big they thought it was a terrorist threat!" Yea, it's bad.

I love him more than I can say, and have been on a drive lately to get photos that I can keep for generations. So, at our New Years dinner, I got him to appease me for a bit (and we have another coming up soon I've assured him). He loved it, and even gave me some 'mafia' poses. I had to share them.

Whew! It's been a crazy couple of weeks for me - hence no word from me on the blog - and I've LOVED it! First, Christmas and New Years have both come and gone. I always have mixed feelings at the end of all of the celebrations. Sad that everything is over, but excited and ready for a new year to start!

This year, my family... and I have a large one... all bundled up for a trip to the airport just after New Years, to head to sunny Miami. That's right, everyone, except for my eldest brother, was able to come. That means my mom and dad lead a group containing, my sisters, Margaux and Nathalie, two of my brothers, Zachary and Jason, my nephew and niece, Hayden and Aixa, and Nathalie's and my boyfriends, Jon and Joe, were all piled up in vehicles and airplanes on our way to paradise like weather. With such a large group, traveling was more like herding a group of cattle, but it was well worth it. The beaches were gorgeous, we got to visit the Keys, we did some deep sea fishing, and we bartered with came away from long swings through jellyfish seemingly unscathed (yes, we knew the jelly fish were there, but I also come from a family of competitive swimmers that simply can't pass up dares to swim a quarter of a mile each way to simply touch a bouy marking the no wake zones).

The only negative to the trip.... my camera's and lenses decided to take a suicide dive out of camera backpack in the middle of Miami International, right onto concrete. Thank goodness I had shot all appointments before leaving. Only bad thing.... I have the three recepients of the Shutters 'Giving is Awesome' Holiday photo giveaway to schedule.

Oh... and yes, I said THREE RECEPIENTS! I couldn't decide on just one winner, as so many great stories came in. So, three deserving families will now be recieving a great gift, thanks to their friends, familiy members, etc, that nominated them.

In between all of this (and before my cameras' fateful 'temporary deaths'), I did get a bit of time to squeez in some photos. So, keep watching, I'll be posting them soon!

It's Christmas Time!

I've been keeping the blog somewhat clear to help keep focus on the Giving Is Awesome Giveaway (which we have received many great responses and nominations on). However, as we are now well into the Eve of Christmas Eve, I wanted to share with you a few Christmas shoots from the last couple of weeks as well as photos of my favorite little ones (yes, I'm a very, very biased aunt) visiting Santa.

It's that time of the year!!!

I will be the first to admit, I am a Holiday nut! I love them all, but three I wait all year for... Fourth of July, Halloween and... CHRISTMAS. I'm always 'that' person in the neighborhood with my lights up early (not to mention then also covering the houses of my parents and sister) forcing them to do the same. I have my trees (yes, plural) up on Thanksgiving so I can get to decorating them, and I seem to wrap twice as many presents as anyone else in the world this year in particular, as Aksel, my one year old Harlequin Great Dane, thinks that they are all his presents and that it is ok to rip open packages when they are under the tree. Who can't love it though, it's the coziest time of the year!!!What I possibly love most about this time of the year however is the excitement and giving in the air. To stay in the giving spirit, Shutters has joined forces with some exciting organizations, so I can give back to the community what I can.

Over the remainder of the Holidays, I'll be sharing with you personal photos of my Holiday celebrations, those I hold dear, my decorations and more. I will also be sharing some exciting Holiday giveaways and contests, so stay tuned!

The Gift of Memories...

It's time again for the Holiday Season, which I can't believe... and I want to help you celebrate!

Almost daily now I'm receiving calls concerning purchasing portraits for family members as Christmas gifts. This got my wheels turning. Totally 'Jaded'...

Ok, so.... I'll admit, I AM totally jaded right now, but it has less to do with my schedule the last few days and more to do with my obsession with the Twilight book series. I can't put the stinking books down, and am on the third book in three days. I'm telling you, obsessed, leading to me not sleeping quite as good as I should me, leading to my sleepiness.

Now, how exactly does that tie into my post? Well, it was from the suggestions of a couple of good friends that I started reading the series. One of those friends just happened to be Jade, the real subject of this posting. Jade is preparing to marry a longtime friend of mine this upcoming summer, and I couldn't be more thrilled about it. Jeremy and her are an adorable couple, and I liked her as soon as I met her... probably because she is one of the only girls I know that will go midnight sledding with me (the first night we met I might add).

Stay tuned to see more of this couple in '09. Jade is sure to be a dashing bride, and I can't wait!

Alright, I have to admit I might be a bit biased on two of the children in my recent Family Shoot with the members of the George family and their aunts and cousins. Two of them happen to be the children of my boyfriend's boss, and we are pretty close to their family. However, it is pretty hard to get get 'cuter' than these guys.

A busy, busy schedule...

I apologize for the time away from blogging. For those of you who might not know much about me I want to take time this post to explain a bit more about me - the lady behind the camera - and what keeps me so busy. So, let's just start right at the beginning!

While attending Harrisonville Middle School, I became involved in photography for our yearbook, which, at that time was an after school project (oh the extra time we all had then). I fell in love..... with photography that is. I was sold on capturing memories, and continued that throughout my time at HHS. I, being the sucker I am, not only was a photographer for the high school's yearbook, but also volunteered to be the ad manager. In conjunction with a terribly terrific marketing teacher my Senior year, photography - and marketing - became my two passions.

Fast forward to college. I enrolled in UMKC on an education scholarship (no, not nearly even a half ride as I didn't turn in my scholarship papers early enough - kids... GET ON IT!) After my freshman year, I decided to move to LA for the summer and work at a production studio. I was 19, living in West Hollywood on Sunset and Alta Vista. Wow, talk about an experience! Being from a town of 8,000 people and moving to Hollywood was a huge leap, but I loved it. I was lucky enough at my job and in my personal experiences to meet some of the most artistic and talented people, who became very good friends. The travels and art spurred me to keep shooting, more so than I had before.

Fast forward another two years. Sophomore and Junior years down while making the Dean's list, I decided to take another leap and move to Europe for the summer to travel and study. I had been so entrentched in school that I wasn't doing much photography. However, that was soon to change. I was booked for 5 weeks of schooling and living in Marseilles, France. Was that enough - NO WAY! So, I took off a month early and traveled all over the UK, Northern France, Netherlands and then down to Southern France. I was once again in love again. This time however, people weren't on the top of my list of beautiful things to shoot, it was the landscape. I would walk the streets day and night and shoot everything, from churches and monuments to parks and cemeteries. Once school started I settled in Marseilles and made fast friends with my roommates. We traveled on weekends to Spain and Corsica, talked our professors into taking us on day trips all over where we would fought with bulls and visit Van Gogh's asylum and Starry Night Cafe. None of us wanted to leave, but were spurred on when we made plans to take another month after classes ended and travel all of Italy and back (once again) to Paris. It was life changing. With so much to see and take in, I started paying even more attention to detail, and off beat backgrounds (that didn't have hundreds of people crowded around).

I came home and immediately switched jobs to begin working with my father at his company, Advantage PressurePro. PressurePro is the leading manufacturer and marketer of Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems, worldwide. I was sold on international relations and wanted to continue working with people in other countries. Within a year I had graduated with honors from UMKC in business administration and was given the opportunity to head up PressurePro's marketing. I didn't hesitate. As soon as I was out of the office however, I had a camera to my eye. I couldn't shake photography. When my brother, sister and a few of their friends asked me to do their senior photos, I made up my mind, I needed to get back into photography at a more regular basis and Shutters Photography was born.

What many people don't know however, is that I also maintain my position with PressurePro. Both marketing and photography are so deeply engrained in me, I simply can't give one or the other up. As I've always been a busy body, I've decided to just plan appropriately for both. How has it worked out? I LOVE IT!

In fact, recently, I've been on a run of Senior and Engagement shots, while also helping PressurePro reach all new levels by landing the cover of Fortune Small Business Magazine. So, I've known this next featured Senior for quite some time, long enough that we were able to load up in my car and travel to anywhere our hearts desired for this Senior Photo Shoot (which I love). Even after editing down, I still had TONS of photos that I just could not purge... so though this is only a very small portion of what we ended with, here is a few of my favorites!

Just a reminder to Seniors, the nice weather is soon disappearing, and while colors are vibrant now, they are soon going to start fading - SO, if you haven't scheduled your Senior Portraits yet, now is the time to do them!

To continue with my story of why Shutters has been too busy editing photos to post, we continue with another story of a very adorable Senior - Mr. Caleb.

I'm smiling even thinking of what I am going to write about Caleb, as well, the thing I like most about him is he ALWAYS smiles. Now, it's hard for a lot of people to do serious faces, or to get candid shots, but with Caleb, it was dang near impossible, and here is why. As I'm shooting, I tend to make the faces I want my subjects to make, behind the camera. Now, I do it unconsciously, but it's habit, and I just don't think it will be one I can break - so, I go with it. Caleb, being the clever Senior he is, picked up on my face making right away, and took the cues like a champ.... as long as we were smiling that is! See, it is a vicious circle when clients, especially seniors, realize the face I'm making when I want them to be serious, as I too, am no good at serious faces. So, I make a 'serious' face, then they see it, and try to make the face, but end up laughing at me for me face, which then makes me laugh for their face..... and so on. You can see the 'trouble' I'm sure.

Ok, so Caleb really is in no way shape or form trouble, and I love shooting happy subjects... they are contagious... so thank you, Caleb, for the evening of smiles!

A Tale of a fun fall Wedding...

As I posted yesterday in my quick little update, it has been a busy week for Shutters! Now that I have a break (during lunch) to sit down, I wanted to tell you about it!

First, let me back up to last Saturday, October 4th. It was a GORGEOUS day, perfect temperature and just enough clouds in the sky to m ake for non-shadowy (yes, I make up my own words sometimes) faces. I walk down the streets of the famous Kansas City Plaza to meet with Lora and Dave, who are slotted to be married in t-minus-3-hours. Now, let me set this up for you, I have spoke with Lora several times and already know that she is very laid back... however, I walk into their hotel to find that Lora is running an errand - and doing so calmly. I sit and join their wedding guests watching Night at the Museum (thanks for letting me watch with you guys), and in about 30 minutes in walks the bride.... in shorts, a t-shirt and a huge, and relaxed, smile. Now, I'm not talking just a calm bride, I'm talking an abnormally laid back, totally down to earth, knew I would love working with her as soon as I saw her bride, not to mention her equally fun fiance Dave, and their EXTREMELY cute son and entire family.

I think I've painted a clear enough picture for you about Lora and Dave, so..... it's no surprise that instead of shooting for an hour and a half or so as we've planned, we end up having a blast getting the bride ready and walk out to shoot only 30 minutes before the ceremony is to start. Lucky for me, they choose a beautiful location so finding backgrounds was a cinch! The wedding went off without a snag, everyone looked gorgeous, and the reception was unbelievably classy. Though I know I've already sent a sneak peak, I can't hold back from sharing with the rest of you a few of my favorite images!

Congrats Lora and Dave - and thank you again for letting me share your day with you... it was perfect!

A quick check in...

I wanted to take a minute ( literally as close to 60 seconds as I can keep it) for a quick check in on the Shutters' Blog between editing.

It's been a marathon editing week with Caleb and Alycia's Senior Photos, Lora and Dave's Wedding, and Sarah and Brian's engagements to complete, but with new actions and textures, I'm definitely up for the task!

Be prepared for MANY MANY posts in the upcoming days as I complete editing on these sessions!

A Week of Weddings

Last Saturday, the 27th, I had the pleasure of shooting a weeding for the lovely Sarah and Willie Cook. First, this was probably the most relaxed wedding I've ever been to, let alone had the honor of shooting. The bride and groom were radiant, the wedding party was a blast, and the images turned out beautifully. Who knew downtown Clinton, Missouri had so many cute spots right in one area!? I'm posting some sneak peak shots for your viewing.

Also, I think that it is fair to call the new photobooth set up a success. The guests really warmed up to it after seeing some fun groups partaking in the candid photo madness. So, watch for a new wedding option coming your way from Shutters soon!

It's cram time again this weekend with a volleyball tournament and wedding shoot tomorrow, and a Senior shoot on Sunday.... good news for you however, as there will be plenty of news coming your way!

MY FIRST BLOG.......

Shutters' Blog is coming soon! Stick with me while I figure this out, well, while I try to find the time to figure this out!

In the meantime, let me pause for a second before running out of the door for more photos to explain a little about myself and Shutters. My name is Vanessa Zaroor and I grew up in Harrisonville, MO a small suburb of Kansas City. Through my middle and high school years I worked with my schools' yearbooks as a photographer, which began a passion that has continued ever since. As I graduated and moved into my college years at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, I began spending summers living in new cities (Los Angeles, CA and Marseilles, France) where I was greatly influenced by all of the new scenery and further travel opportunities. I began furiously taking landscape shots, and shots of my friends in our newly discovered surroundings.

As time passed I continued ‘shooting’ to ‘quench’ my passion of photography, which was further fueled by a great introductory photography/development professor my senior year of college who gave me my first taste of advanced PhotoShop editing and who encouraged me to continue working with my photos. In late 2005 I decided to form Shutters Photography with a long time friend and we began our pursuit of providing a fresh taste of photography to our local areas, mine being Kansas City and its suburbs. As of the beginning of ’08, I have taken over Shutters Photography, L.L.C. to better serve my clients and my focus areas of portraits (seniors, etc), sports, children, families, engagement/wedding and maternity pictures.

As mentioned before, my style is best described as ‘fresh’. I understand that many of your most treasured moments are those that don’t normally get captured in traditional (and sometimes stiff) photo sessions. I want to show the excitement of parents or a sibling holding a new addition to their family, and the spunk of a senior so close to graduations. In order to do so, my sessions are set and worked in a relaxed setting. I make it a point to bring your personality into a shoot to provide you with the most unique, and most appreciated, photos available.

I currently continue to cover Harrisonville, Missouri and Kansas City, Missouri areas, but am open to travel, just ask!

Now, I'm off to shoot a game....... and then running again tomorrow for a big wedding shoot. Lots of attendants, Southern style theme.... should be a blast. Early congrats Sarah and Willy!
